When you live a busy life and you're trying to lose weight, it can be tricky trying to stick to a healthy diet plan. It's very tempting to choose foods that are pre-prepared. Having food from a can or a box when you're pressed for time can be a relief but they are often very low in nutritional value.

If a product is full of preservatives, is pre-cooked, has added sugar and colours it isn't going to give you the nutrition it contained before all that processing. Let's take a look at 5 tips for a healthy diet plan to help you lose weight naturally.

You Can Lose Weight Naturally.

While convenience foods are easy and quick to prepare, they are not the best things to have on your healthy diet menu. When you eat foods that are as natural as possible, your body gets the maximum amount of the nutrients in it. This will help you to lose weight naturally and enjoy better health.

1. What's In It?

If you can't pronounce the list of ingredients, give the food a miss. Processed foods are typically filled with preservatives, all kinds of sugar, salt, trans and saturated fats and have hardly any nutritional value. Be careful as well with the 'fat free' variations of processed foods. Manufacturers take out the fat but often include extra sugar to enhance the taste which normally results in extra calories.

2. Fresh Is Best.

Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, not those out of cans. If you can't get fresh produce, go for frozen over canned. Frozen is the next best thing to fresh.

3. Grow Your Own And Freeze Them.

Most vegetables you plan to freeze should be blanched for two to five minutes, or until they are just done. Blanching is the process of heating vegetables with boiling water or steam for a set amount of time, then immediately plunging them into cold or iced water. It stops enzyme activity that causes vegetables to lose nutrients and change texture.

4. Eat Organic Or Grass Fed Meats.

Studies show that grass-fed beef has less fat and more nutrients than grain-fed beef. Going organic also reduces exposure to toxins from pesticides that might accumulate in animal fat. Also look for milk that is made from cows not treated with growth hormones. If anything sounds like it was made in a lab instead of grown on a farm or ranch, leave it in the store.

5. Remember You Need Healthy Fats.

There are a number of 'good fats' which are beneficial for your heart, your cholesterol, and your general health. These are monounsaturated fats (such as olive oil, sunflower oil, avocados, almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts and cashew nuts) and polyunsaturated fats (such as soybean oil, sunflower, sesame, and pumpkin seeds, salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines).

How Doing This One Simple Trick Will Let You Eat the Foods You Love and Skip the "Diet Foods."

Being a trainer I inevitably get asked questions like: "What do you eat?" "What are the best diet foods?" Or something along the lines of "You're a vegetarian right?" Not... even... close! And every time I get asked this I know what they are thinking. They think I am going to tell them I eat diet foods, e.g., cottage cheese, chicken breast, veggies and protein drinks, all day long. My digestive system is annoyed just thinking about that. But the funny thing is that when I first "got in shape" after playing football, that's kind of how I ate. That and an enormous amount of working out helped me lose 65 pounds or so in three to four months. But it wasn't sustainable and was definitely not right for my body.

So when I tell people I don't eat diet foods, that I eat French toast, pancakes, eggs, bacon (yummm!), lasagna, steaks, burgers (OK, I'm getting a little out of control), they look at me like I'm crazy, or they think my being in shape "just comes naturally." I work really hard on my exercise program and I put just as much effort into what I eat-especially where it comes from.

How Eating Quality Foods Will Allow You to Skip Diet Foods

There is the trick if you didn't catch it: eating "quality foods" means you do not have to eat diet foods. Where you get your food really matters! As long as I am eating for my metabolic type and not overeating or indulging, healthy foods keep me healthy and I am not overweight. The easiest way to do this is to eat organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised, wild-caught, nonprocessed, pesticide- and herbicide-free food. If you do that, you are on the right track.

Our body does not know what processed food is. It gets confused. And when it gets confused it doesn't process it as well. This leads to bloating and inflammation, which leads to feeling and looking like crap. So if you are buying and eating food that Monsanto "grew" (used really loosely), having a burger that was fed corn and by-products, or a chicken that "lived" (again, used loosely) in an overcrowded coop, that is what you are turning your body into. You are what you eat. Imagine that you were only allowed to eat junk food and had to stay in your room. How healthy do you think you would be? Well, when we eat conventional food, that is what we are ingesting.

This Is Overwhelming!

No, it's not. It's an easy fix. Start going to establishments and to farmers markets where they grow and support real food. Ask the managers, or better yet the farmers at the market, "Do you practice organic farming?" A lot of farmers do but are unable to purchase the organic title because it is so expensive and red-tape driven.

Also, start to track your food, and more important, how you feel when you eat. No need to calorie-track; it doesn't work. Just start to realize what foods work for you and make them part of your diet. You will know when they are right because your weight will normalize (as long as you are exercising properly and enough), you will have more energy, your body will be less achy, and you will be more clearheaded.

There are many reasons to support and eat organically grown foods. And if for no other reason, do it to take care of yourself. Happy eating!

What does "dieting" mean?

For just about all people, the term "dieting" means not eating the foods they love, eating smaller portions, and worst of all skipping meals. I hope we all know by now that dieting is hard and does not work for the long-term fat loss we all want.

Let's take a closer look at the 3 methods of dieting, the side effects, and the proper way to deal with your diet.

Not Eating The Foods You Love To Lose Fat

You probably love the same foods as me and most Americans, over- processed, high in fat and sugar, and oversized portions. We need those over sized portions because the food we are eating is not the nutrition our bodies need. They are just empty calories that our body stores as fat.

If you are trying to change your whole diet at once, that can be just as hard as quitting smoking. I tried and the side effects of cutting all sugar were quite painful. I lasted 3 weeks. The key here is to add a couple healthy things to your diet and cut back on the unhealthy stuff. An example would be to add fruit as a snack during the day instead of doughnuts but only every other day. Then add one more day of fruit a week with an occasional doughnut.

Whatever you do, do not call it cheating. You can only cheat while dieting, and that is not what you are doing. You are changing your diet to have better health, a lighter, thinner body, more energy, higher self-esteem, and the knowledge you are doing what is best for you and your family.

Eating Smaller Portions To Lose Fat

Leaving the table hungry is not the way to go. This is one of the things that make dieting very difficult. It will put you in a bad mood because you feel like you are punishing yourself for doing what you love, eating. After a few days of being hungry and weak, you rebel against yourself and eat a whole pizza by yourself. This leads to guilt and resentment and low self-esteem.

When changing your diet to nutritious foods, it is better to eat more often with smaller portions. There is a whole list of foods you can find that are healthy, low calorie and full of the nutrients your body needs. The more your body gets used to getting those nutrients, the less hungry you will feel. Personally, my favorite snack that keeps me away from the vending machine is cocktail peanuts.

I eat a handful about every hour and this event helps to eat a smaller lunch. That may be more than is recommended but I do have a labor intensive job that burns a lot of calories. I do still eat fast food on occasion, but it will just be one small sandwich off the value menu, such as a chicken sandwich. Never get the fries!

So eating smaller portions of great tasting healthy foods will keep your metabolism going and the fat burning.

Skipping Meals To Lose Fat

Skipping meals is the worst dieting method you can do to lose fat. Eating food actually boosts the metabolism and keeps your body burning calories. This also gives you energy to do more with your day and burn more fat. When you skip meals bad things happen to your body. Your metabolism, the fat burning mechanism, slows down to conserve energy to keep your organs working. If you only eat once a day, your body will store just about the whole meal to keep your body going during the times of no new fuel. It stores this as fat.

For breakfast, I either drink a whey protein drink, about 170 calories, or eat a spinach salad, about 230 calories, but both give me a lot of energy, healthy unsaturated fats, vitamins and micro-nutrients for healthy body function. Give yourself this one boost in the morning and you will see a difference.

If you find that you only like eating pastries or doughnuts for breakfast, try switching them out a couple days a week to start. It will take time for your taste buds to adjust to your new diet. That is what the protein drink is for. My sweet chocolate fix for the day! Just remember that to lose fat, you want less carbs and more protein. To gain weight, eat more carbs and less protein.
